With EmptyShoebox, if you do one thing right, the rest is easy. That one thing is documenting your expenses.

OK. Did you receive an email asking you to verify your email? Good. Do it. You’re GTG.

DO STEP ONE

OK. Take a bank card from your wallet. Or make one up in your head. Send a message… Who are we sending to? Speaking@emptyshoebox.com… Your message should say “New account, name is – name that you call the card or account – bank is – name of the bank – card is – the 4 digits of the card number “.

Go to step two.

DO STEP TWO

You will receive a response email with the subject line : “Here’s the record you just submitted…” There will be an email relating to any records you create. Review the response. Is everything correct? If not, don’t worry. You can fix it.

Every record has a field that is returned which is a transcript of the message you sent. “Your original message read:” Now, if there are mistakes, you can see where they came from. Keep in mind… getting good with your speech-text-engine is a skill. You might not be ready for prime time, but… you’ve already accomplished the most important thing. You’ve created the record in the cloud.

Now, create an expense. Say “New expense vendor is <insert vendor name> amount is <insert amount here> description is <provide a brief useful description of your purchase> account is <insert the name or number of the account that you just created from step one>” And you’re done. You’ve created an expense entry in your cloud.

There is a lot more information that you can add to an expense record, all done by talking. You can add a job by name. Leave out the date, and the date defaults to today’s date. ( hint : you don’t have to include a date ). Expenses are super-user-friendly.

DO STEP THREE

Get a report. Send the message “Hey Simon review my expenses.” Check your inbox.
